As beloved as she was successful, Mary Fleig won 523 games in 30 seasons as the head coach of the Millersville University women’s basketball program. Arriving in 1990, Fleig earned a PSAC record six Eastern Division Coach of the Year awards while her Marauders won seven PSAC East titles, a PSAC Championship in 2005, and reached the NCAA Tournament nine times.
Among Division II coaches who led programs for at least 30 years, Fleig ranks 11th in career winning percentage and 14th in career wins. When she retired, Fleig’s 645 total wins ranked 25th in wins among all collegiate women’s basketball coaches regardless of division.
Fleig’s program produced results with amazing consistency. She coached in the postseason 25 times, including a record 18 consecutive PSAC Tournament appearances. Her teams totaled 24 winning seasons. She developed 53 All-PSAC East selections, five PSAC East Athlete of the Year award winners and 19 1,000-point scorers. Seven of Fleig’s players have been inducted into the Millersville Athletics Hall of Fame. Her 1999-2000 and 2009-10 teams reached the NCAA Sweet 16.
Fleig came to Millersville following a successful tenure at Franklin & Marshall, and she immediately led the Marauders to the PSAC Tournament. Millersville went 15-9 in her second season, starting a run of 23 consecutive winning seasons. Fleig’s first PSAC East title came in 1992-93. In 1998-99, Fleig’s Marauders went 22-8, beginning a seven-season stretch with six 20-win seasons, five NCAA Tournament appearances, and three PSAC East titles. The 2004-05 team went 11-1 in PSAC East play and defeated California, the defending national champion, inside Pucillo Gymnasium for the PSAC Championship.
From 2007-08 through 2009-10, Fleig won three consecutive PSAC East titles with a combined 36-4 division record. In 2017-18, Fleig’s team made a memorable run to the PSAC championship game, winning a three-overtime thriller against nationally ranked IUP in the semifinals before finishing as the runner-up the following day.
Fleig retired as Millersville’s head coach in 2020 after serving 30 years as a dedicated coach, mentor, and friend to countless student-athletes and staff.
