Millersville men’s basketball games in Pucillo Gymnasium have become synonymous with the voice of Dr. Ralph Anttonen. Better known as Doc Roc to Marauders, he has been a fixture behind the public address microphone for the last 44 years, beginning in 1972. Doc has also announced Millersville women’s volleyball matches since the early 2000’s.

Doc’s voice and call of the games have provided the Marauders with a distinct home court advantage.

“Pucillo Gymnasium has always been one of the toughest places in the PSAC to play,” said longtime Millersville basketball assistant coach Damian Pitts. “This is due in no small part to Doc’s ability to get the crowd and player excited. He has been a major part of the success that the men’s basketball program has enjoyed during his decades of service.”

In Doc’s era behind the microphone, the men’s basketball team won 10 PSAC East titles, five PSAC Championships and hosted four NCAA regionals.

He has worked side-by-side with his wife, Judy, at both basketball games and volleyball matches as she has served as a scoreboard operator for nearly 20 years.

Doc first arrived at Millersville in 1971 to serve as the director of education research. He served as the chairman of the department of academic and student development and as the coordinator of exploratory program for 27 years. Doc was the advisor WIXQ, the student radio station, for 37 years.

Doc retired in 2013 but has continued to man the microphone in Pucillo Gymnasium. He has also carried on as host of the “Oldies But Goodies” show on WIXQ, which he started in 1979. His professional awards include: Friend of Media Award by the Society of Collegiate Journalists (1983), National First Year Student Advocate Award (1991), and Excellence in Service to Student Award by the National Society of Leadership and Success (2011). He was the recipient of the Honorary Alumni Award, presented by the Millersville University Alumni Association in 2010.

Doc and Judy were honored as grand marshals for the Millersville Community Homecoming Parade and have been longtime PIAA cross country officials. The couple also directed the Millersville Mile for 25 years.

Doc is the father of two children, Eric and Karen, and the grandfather of nine grandchildren: Evan, Elise, Emma, Ethan, Isaac, Elijah, Isaiah, Sarah and Miriam.
