Cynthia Merrill Smith served as Millersville’s top-of-the-lineup player in singles and doubles for all four seasons of her career, and at the time of her graduation in 1992, no singles player to don the Black and Gold had won more matches.

From 1987-91, Merrill posted a 41-16 record, which ranked first in Millersville history at the time of her graduation and still places her 13th on the program’s career wins list. Only one other Marauder that played before the 1995 season ranks in the top 15 on that list. Merrill’s 41 victories came when the team played no more than 12 dual matches in any of her four seasons, and she accomplished the feat while playing against the opposing team’s best player each and every match.  She currently ranks 10th overall in career winning percentage (.719).

Merrill’s banner season came in 1990 when she posted a 14-2 record and became the first Marauder to win the PSAC First Flight Championship. That achievement landed her PSAC Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Year recognition.  She finished her senior season at MU ranked 37th in Division II.

Merrill graduated from Millersville with a bachelor’s of science in mathematics education. She also earned a master's degree in education administration in 1998 from Morgan State University.  She is currently a math instructor at Delaware Technical College and a part-time fitness instructor at Sea Colony Resorts in Bethany Beach, Delaware. Cindy currently resides in Ocean View, Delaware, with her husband Duncan Smith and four children, McClain (14), Delaney (13), Merrill (9), and Josephine (3).
