As the Millersville women’s tennis team rolled to four consecutive PSAC Championships from 1998-99 through 2001-02, Abbie Sweitzer Mahaffey won more matches than any other player in program history and won with remarkable proficiency.

Of the six conference championships in program history, Sweitzer Mahaffey was a key cog in four of them, piling up an astounding 101-15 singles record for a program best .871 winning percentage. She totaled a 102-22 career doubles record (ranking first in school history), and when pairing with Kristina Eger Dippner, the duo went 64-11, which also represents the second-best winning percentage (.853) for any team at Millersville.

Playing alongside future hall of famer Lauren Witmer and All-PSAC standout Abbey Neff, Sweitzer Mahaffey more than did her part, as the Marauders won 83 matches and reached the NCAA Quarterfinals four times. She won 28 matches as a freshman, 33 as a sophomore and 26 as a junior—the three highest win totals in program history. While the team only played 16 duals during her senior year of 2001-02, Sweitzer Mahaffey won 14 matches playing in the No. 1 flight, leading the team to another PSAC title and an NCAA Tournament win. In her final season, she was voted PSAC Tournament MVP, East Region Senior of the Year and All-PSAC East First Team. She teamed with Kate Opilo to win the ITA East Region doubles title and earned a trip to the ITA Small College National Doubles Tournament.

In total, Sweitzer Mahaffey earned All-PSAC East recognition in singles and doubles in all four seasons. She was the ITA Rolex East Region runner-up in singles and doubles as a sophomore in 1999-2000.

An outstanding student, Sweitzer Mahaffey graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in education before earning a master’s degree in education with a 4.0 GPA. She also earned a doctoral degree in education leadership from Widener University in 2019. Sweitzer Mahaffey is now the reading/language arts supervisor in the Palmyra School District and has served as the boys’ varsity tennis team coach since 2012. She is married to Millersville tennis alum and former PSAC Athlete of the Year Keith Mahaffey.
