Millersville, Pa. - In recognition of the largest endowed gift in Millersville Athletics history, the newly-named Morgan Academic Center for Student Athletes will be dedicated on Saturday, Dec. 1 prior to the women's basketball game.
The center, located in the athletic department's home of Jefferson Hall, will be named in honor of Lois Morgan '54 after she established a $500,000 endowment, called the Morgan Scholarship Fund for Women's Athletics. Morgan will be honored at an 11:30 a.m. dedication in the Anttonen Lobby in Pucillo Gymnasium.
The Morgan Academic Center for Student Athletes provides a study space and access to computers, tutoring and additional academic resources.
"Lois is someone who genuinely cares about the student-athlete experience and understands the impact of receiving an incredible education while also competing for championships," said Millersville University Director of Athletics Miles Gallagher. "Her commitment is going to impact the lives of countless students and we are incredibly thankful for her support."
The Morgan Scholarship Fund for Women's Athletics will provide enhanced scholarship dollars to recruit and retain the most talented female student athletes on the field and in the classroom; will balance Title IX scholarship funding for men's and women's programs; and will create a more equal playing field of available scholarship dollars among conference rivals.
The gift also comes as Millersville University celebrates the 100th anniversary of intercollegiate women's athletics. The women's basketball team, which was the first intercollegiate team at Millersville in 1918-19, will wear commemorative shooting shirts throughout the season, and a commemorative event is planned for the spring of 2019.
