Jamestown, N.Y. - Not even a one-hour lightning delay could derail Millersville's
Cordell Shannon Thursday night. The Marauder sophomore and Shippensburg native tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout and Millersville defeated Shippensburg 6-0 to advance in NCAA Atlantic Regional.
Shannon had just tossed a 1-2-3 sixth when lightning and rain sent the teams to the locker rooms for an hour. After the break, Shannon returned to the mound and retired the side in the seventh, escaped a two-on jam in the eighth by picking off the runner on first base, and then stranded a runner in the ninth to preserve his fifth win and fifth complete game of the season. Shannon struck out a season-high eight batters and surrendered just two singles.
Only 11 days earlier, Shannon made his final regular season start against the very same Shippensburg club and tossed a three-hit shutout over seven innings. In his last two starts--both against Shippensburg--Shannon allowed five hits over 16 scoreless innings, and he has now tossed 19 consecutive scoreless innings dating back to April 29.
The Marauders' bats chased Shippensburg starter Andy Crum (5-4) after four innings, tagging him for five runs on 11 hits. Crum had thrown three shutout innings of relief against Millersville earlier this season. But every hitter in Millersville's lineup recorded at least one hit, and
Ben Snyder tallied three hits, and
Mitch Stoltzfus drove in three with a single, two-run home run and sacrifice fly.
Chas McCormick went 2-for-5 while driving in Millersville's first and last runs. The two hits boosted his career total to 303, just one shy of tying the PSAC career hits record.
The six runs Millersville scored Thursday was the exact total it scored in all four games of the regular season series against Shippensburg.
McCormick's single in the second scored
Jimmy Cain, and the Marauders added another in the third when
David Summerfield singled after a Snyder double.
Dan Neff's liner off the third base bag resulted in a RBI double, and Stoltzfus' fourth homer of the year put Millersville in front by five.
Shippensburg put only two runners in scoring position. Shannon took his no-hitter through 4 2/3.
The Marauders now take on No. 1 seed and host Mercyhurst (37-6) Friday at 3 p.m.
