Box Score 2 Erie, Pa. - Back-to-back, dramatic walk-off wins burnt all the gas in the Millersville Marauders' tank. The problem was that they still had nine innings to go against top-seeded Mercyhurst for a trip to Cary, N.C., and the NCAA Championship Tournament. The Lakers sat and watched Millersville beat Winston-Salem State 6-5 on
Tyler Orris' bottom of the ninth single. Just one hour after mobbing Orris at first base, the Marauders squared off against the top-seeded Lakers. The Lakers, in front of a home crowd, received the clutch hits that Millersville couldn't quite muster and a pitching performance from three hurlers that just outmatched the Marauders'. Millersville's season came to a close with a 2-0 title game loss and a 45-11 record.
Millersville fought its way to the NCAA Atlantic Region title round for the third time since 2011 with sheer determination. After losing its opening game of the regional, the Marauders won three in a row. Against Winston-Salem State on Sunday morning, Millersville trailed by scores of 2-0, 3-1 and 5-3 but reponded every time. After Winston-Salem State scored two runs off
Brandon Miller, who was pitching on short rest, Millersville came right back in the bottom of the seventh with a RBI double from
Tyler McDonald and a run-scoring ground out from freshman
Ted Williams.
Millersville nearly took the lead in the eighth, putting runners on the corners with no outs but couldn't get the go-ahead across. It only prolonged the inevitable. McDonald and Williams singled to lead off the inning, Neff reached on an error, and while McDonald was thrown out at the plate trying to score on the play, Orris came through in the clutch. He bounced a single up the middle that allowed Williams to scamper home from third, giving the Marauders a spot in the championship game.
Miller received the pitching win by throwing three innings after a start on Thursday.
Reid Anderson gave 3.2 strong innings out of the bullpen as well. Orris reached base four times with two singles and two walks.
Jeremy Musser went 2-for-4 with a two-run single in the sixth that tied the game at 3-3 and gave the Marauders' new life.
Millersville faced no small task in following up four games in four days and consecutive emotional wins with a fifth game against the No. 10 team in Division II. The Lakers rolled out ace Colin McKee on short rest and he struck out eight over 4.2. Millersville's
Cody Stoneback and
Logan Grant went toe-to-toe with the All-PSAC West hurler, combining for 6.0 innings of work, allowing four hits and one run.
The Lakers were kept off the board until the sixth when Giancarlo Saia singled in Angel Martinez, who led off the inning with a single. Millersville pushed runners into scoring position in the third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings but just couldn't come up with the timely hit it needed. The team's best scoring chance came in the fourth when Musser led off with a double and reached third on a wild pitch. But McKee was up for the challenge and escaped, striking out two to end the inning.
The Marauders entered the final two frames trailing 2-0 and running on fumes. Reliever Jake Hall retired the final six batters of the game to give Coach Joe Spano his first trip to Cary, N.C.
The Marauders' thrilling and memorable season came to an end with a PSAC Championship and a fourth trip to the NCAA Atlantic Regional in five seasons. It was the program's first conference tournament win since 1998 and the 45 wins tied a school record. Numerous individual records were set including
Dan Stoltzfus breaking the single-season home run and RBI records.
David Summerfield tied the hits record with 80 despite playing sparingly in the regional.
Chris Murphy and
Brandon Miller tied the school record for wins in a season, and Murphy finished his career with 33-4 record.
