West Chester, Pa. - Millersville field hockey's bid to repeat as PSAC Champions was foiled by top-seeded and No. 1-ranked West Chester Saturday at Vonnie Gros Field, 3-0.
Millersville (17-3) was making its third consecutive title game appearance but just as it happened in 2012, West Chester (18-2), playing on its home turf, shut out Millersville to win its second PSAC Championship in the last three years. It was the first time that Millersville had played in three consecutive title games.
The nation's most potent offense entered the game averaging better than four goals per game and started quickly and held off a furious comeback effort by Millersville in the 35 minutes. All three West Chester goals came on long rushes to the cage. The first came just 7:18 into the game when Rachal Toppi carried down the sideline and pushed a pass to a streaking Marnie Kusakavitch, who tapped it past Marauder keeper
Lauren Sotzin. The Golden Rams built a 2-0 lead with just 55 seconds remaining in the first half when Dayle Paustian cracked a shot to the right post where Alayna Brown tipped it to the back of the cage.
West Chester managed only two shots in the first half but scored on both. Millersville entered the second half as the aggressor and suffocated West Chester, keeping the Rams to two shots while totaling five of its own. The Marauders' narrowly missed on several opportunities in the second period.
Champayne Hess' shot at 42:26 dribbled through the legs of keeper Sarah Krause, but Hannah Davies cleared the ball away before a Marauder could reach it.
Olivia Hershey and
Katelyn Zapp also put shots on goal during its desperation push, and one diving Zapp attempt went just wide of the right post.
With the Marauders pushing into their offensive end, West Chester managed another breakaway with 3:20 to play. Brown took a long cross that found Rachal Toppi for her 21st goal of the season.
Millersville, positioned second in the most recent NCAA Atlantic Region ranking will most certainly earn a berth into the NCAA Division II Tournament for the second season in a row. The NCAA seedings will be announced in a selection show on Sunday, Nov. 23. With the championship game win, West Chester likely receives a bye to the semifinal in Louisville, Ky., while Millersville is expected to play a quarterfinal game on Tuesday, Nov. 25.
