Lock Haven, Pa. - After an impressive rookie season which included a win in the 200-meter dash at the PSAC Championships, Millersville's Jeff Robinson was named the PSAC Men's Outdoor Track and Field Freshman of the Year on Tuesday.
Robinson is the first male Marauder to secure a postseason award since Dan Ober in 2004. He earned the accolades after finishing the two-day PSAC championships last month with a first-place finish in the 200, posting a time of 21.35 seconds. Robinson ran the conference's best time all season at the championships.
“He had to handle a lot of pressure,” said head coach Scott Weiser. “Not just pressure of having the top time, but from [racing] strong seasoned competitors in the conference.” Robinson, however, did not allow the stress to affect him.
In becoming the first Millersville men's 200 champion in 14 years, the Philadelphia, Pa. native “handled it with strength and class, as if no one else was there,” said Weiser. “He ran his race and once he got around the turn at top speed, no one could keep up with him.”
Not only did the freshman take home top honors in his first collegiate championship meet, but his season-best time of 10.99 seconds in the 100 landed him fourth place -- just .14 behind the first-place finisher. He also ran the second leg of the school record-breaking 4x100-meter relay team, helping it to a fourth-place finish in the event.
Adding to his resume, Robinson ran the third leg of the 4x200-meter relay team that set a school record of 1:28.02 at the world famous Penn Relays in April.
Despite running impressive times throughout the 2010 season, Robinson came to Millersville with only two years of track experience under his belt, making his accomplishments all the more remarkable.
“Right out of the box Jeff had all the tools necessary to run great times,” explained Weiser. “In time, he will be someone who has reached the mountaintop, but started underground.”
