Millersville, Pa. - Millersville wrestling senior Jarrett Hostetter and redshirt sophomore Shane Smith are both headed back to the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships after winning their respective weight classes at Saturday's NCAA East Regional held at Pucillo Gymnasium.
The 157-pound Hostetter, voted the tournament's most outstanding wrestler by the region coaches, not only earned his third trip to the national championships, but his win in the finals also put him in elite company as he became just the seventh wrestler in the 64 years of Millersville wrestling to win 100 matches.
Smith captured his second-straight NCAA East Regional crown at 174 pounds and will make his second appearance at nationals.
As a team, the Marauders placed third with 56.5 points. Millersville put four wrestlers in championship matches, and that total was topped only by team champion Liberty, which totaled 110.5 points with six first-place and three runner-up finishes. Liberty won the team title for the fourth year in a row. Head coach Jesse Castro was recognized as the most outstanding coach of the regional. On the strength of six third-place finishers, Gardner-Webb placed just ahead of Millersville with 74.5 points.
Hollywood writers couldn't have written a more perfect script for Hostetter. The 2008 East Regional champ sat out the 2008-09 season with a redshirt, and he entered the tournament not only needing two wins to qualify for nationals, but he also needed two wins for 100. If he was denied one, he would be denied the other.
Wrestling at Pucillo Gymnasium for the last time in his Millersville career, he dominated the weight class many considered the deepest and most competitive in the tournament. In the semifinal bout, he easily dispatched Campbell's Jake Fose with a 12-1 major decision.
He needed only one more win, but standing in his path was Liberty's Shaun Smith, who won the regional title in Hostetter's absence a year ago. Hostetter took back his crown emphatically, pinning Smith's shoulders to the mat just 1:28 into the first period.
Hostetter joined Tom Barley and Curtis Yeager as the only three-time NCAA Division I Championship qualifiers in school history.
While Hostetter was named most outstanding wrestler, Smith staked a claim for it, as well. Smith has only been a Marauder for two seasons, but will be making his second trip to nationals after a dominating effort at 174 pounds. Smith wasted little time in his opening bout, pinning Gardner-Webb's Vincent Salyer in just 32 seconds.
He drew Liberty's Brad Clark in the title tilt. With the score tied heading into the third period, Smith chose the down position and earned an escape to break the tie. He quickly scored a takedown to boost his lead, and he was able to hold off Clark's last efforts in the final minute, securing a 7-4 decision.
Also reaching the finals for Millersville were 165-pound senior Jeremy Brooks and 149-pound #J.J. Lester#. Brooks, the returning champ, had been hampered by a knee injury all season and entered the tournament clearly not 100 percent. In the semifinal, he used a late reversal to break a tied match and earn an 8-6 win over Duquesne's Nathan Reinhart. But just before the reversal, Brooks' already injured knee was twisted underneath Reinhart, causing him to take injury time.
Brooks battled through the pain in the final, but was unable to overcome the injury. Liberty's Chad Porter was a worthy champion, though, downing Brooks by major decision, 12-1.
Lester reached the final after a tight 3-2 decision over Gardner-Webb's Ryan Medved in the semis. He nearly pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the tournament in the championship match against top-seeded Frank Geyeski, too. Geyeski entered the regional with a 23-6 record and scored a major decision in his opening match. Lester, however, entered the final period tied at two with Geyeski. Geyeski picked up one point to move in front, but with time ticking away, Lester went on the attack and nearly scored a takedown. But just before he could gain advantage, the clock expired, and Geyeski survived with a 3-2 decision.
Millersville freshman Josh Marquard posted a 2-1 record in his first regional to earn third place. He topped Campbell's Derek Tomasone in the pigtail match, 9-7. He was pinned by eventual champion Nick Knowles of Liberty in the semifinal, but bounced back with a pin of Duquesne's Ryan Sula in the third-place bout.
Hostetter and Smith now travel to Omaha, Neb., for the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships on March 18. Continue to check the millersvilleathletics.com for more details on the pair's trip.
