Omaha, Neb. - Millersville senior Jarrett Hostetter stayed in the mix at the NCAA Wrestling Championships Thursday, winning his bout in the second consolation round after falling in the opening round. Teammate Shane Smith, however, was ousted after a close defeat in his consolation match.
Hostetter, now 24-6 on the season, was bounced from the championship bracket by American's fifth-seeded Steve Fittery by a 14-4 major decision. Undaunted, Hostetter came back strong late in the evening with a 7-1 victory over The Citadel's Turtogtokh Luvsandorj, advancing to the third round of the wrestleback bracket.
After no scoring in the first period, Hostetter picked up the match's first point with a quick escape to start the second. He boosted the lead to 3-0 with a takedown before the period close. Luvsandorj picked up his lone point with an escape in the third, but Hostetter went to work, hitting a takedown and two nearfall points to earn the decision.
Hostetter faces Oregon State's Keegan Davis Friday morning. Now in a win-or-go-home situation, Hostetter could wrestle as many as four matches Friday.
Smith nearly pulled off a win in the consolation round, as well, but was edged 4-3 by Oklahoma's Jeff James. Smith, making his second appearance at nationals, fell behind early on a James takedown. Smith picked up points with an escape in the first and an escape in the third. He also received one penalty point. But by the time Smith broke away and tied James 3-3 in the third, James had earned enough riding time for a point and a 4-3 decision.
Smith landed in the wrestleback bracket after a tough opening match against Binghamton's 2009 All-American Josh Patterson. Patterson controlled the bout from the start and won by a 9-0 major decision.
While Hostetter will attempt to crack the top eight and become Millersville's second Division I All-American in his third try, Smith's season comes to a close. The redshirt sophomore posted a 23-9 record and tied for 13th nationally with 13 pins.
