Millersville, Pa. — On Monday afternoon Mashira Newman, of the 23rd-ranked Millersville women's basketball team, was named PSAC East Freshman of the Week for the second time this season. Newman averaged 14.7 points per game and seven rebounds per game as the Marauders went 3-0 last week to secure their third consecutive PSAC Eastern Division title.
Newman was previously recognized by the conference as its East Athlete of the Week on Nov. 23 and as its East Freshman of the Week on Jan. 11. The North Hills, Pa., product scored 15 points while going 6-of-11 from the field in Millersville's 68-41 rout of Shippensburg last Monday evening. Newman also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and chipped in with three steals in the Marauders second victory of 20 points or more against the Lady Raiders this season.
As good as Newman was against Ship, she was even better against Cheyney last Wednesday. The redshirt freshman came within a point of tying her career-high by leading the team with 21 points in a 75-64 victory at Pucillo Gymnasium. Newman played a well-rounded game with six rebounds, four assists and four steals and was a major reason that Millersville avenged its earlier conference loss against the Wolves.
Newman was back at it again in Bloomsburg on Saturday. While her eight points were a personal-low for the week, she still had no trouble finding the scoresheet. The rookie guard played a career-high 38 minutes collecting seven more rebounds and distributing a team-high six dimes to help the Marauders to a 56-47 win and the program's 10th division title. Already the school's all-time freshman steals leader, Newman registered three more against the Huskies to bring her season total to 89. With 11 more steals she'll become the first Millersville player to eclipse the 100-steal mark in a season since Gema Robles set a PSAC and school-record with 171 in 2002-03.
Averaging 10.6 points per game and 4.4 rebounds per game for the season, Newman has helped lead Millersville to a 21-4 overall record. The Marauders currently sit at 11-1 in the PSAC East with two regular season games remaining.
The Marauders return to action Wednesday night as they travel to East Stroudsburg for a 6 p.m. tip.
