Largely untested all season, the No. 1 Gannon Lady Knights stared their first defeat of the season straight in the eyes for nearly 30 minutes in Monday night’s NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Championship. Thanks to its hounding defense, the Millersville women’s basketball team traded blows with the nation’s only unbeaten team before falling 65-48 on Gannon’s home court at the Hammermill Center.

The Millersville women's basketball team goes in search of its first ever NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Championship on Monday night in Erie, Pa., against the top-ranked and unbeaten Gannon Lady Knights. The Marauders are in the Regional Final for the first time since the 1999-2000 season and can set the school record for wins in a season by knocking off the region's top seed.

But on Saturday night in Hamer Hall, led by double-doubles from Raquel Green and Mashira Newman, the Marauders rolled past the 25th-ranked Vulcans 74-63 and into the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region championship game for the first time since 2000.

Games like this is why the NCAA Division II Tournament is so interesting. Millersville, the No. 6 seed, and third-seeded West Liberty meet in the second of three games to be played at the California-hosted subregional on March 12 at 8 p.m. The teams are guided by two of the winningest coaches in Division II, and while both have enjoyed tremendous amounts of success playing in the same region, the two programs rarely meet (just once before) and play polar-opposite styles of basketball.

The Millersville women's basketball team won its third-straight PSAC Eastern Division title this season, and some of the key factors to its success were a trio of seniors and the consistent presence of 20th-year head coach Mary Fleig. On Tuesday, the coaches of the PSAC acknowledged the Marauders by naming Fleig PSAC East Coach of the Year and seniors Raquel Green, Ashley Moyer and Jenna Craig All-PSAC East.
